Committed to Community
Acts 2:42-47 (ESV)
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
A pig and a chicken were walking down the road. As they passed a local church, they noticed a pot luck breakfast was under way. So being caught up in the spirit, the pig said to the chicken, let’s make a contribution to the cause. Great idea, cried the chicken, let’s offer them bacon and eggs! Not so fast, said the pig. For you, that is just a contribution, but for me, it’s a total commitment! This is a fable about being committed to a cause and the sacrifice that’s involved in such a commitment.
One of the many things that the early church was committed to or devoted to was the fellowship or the community of believers. To be in fellowship or community is to have all things in common and do life together. The early church was so committed to one another that they were willing to sacrifice their possessions to meet the material needs of one another. The early church was so committed to the fellowship that they studied together; prayed together; broke bread together; witnessed miraculous signs and wonders together; worshipped together and they cared for each other. Acts 2:42-47 teaches us that when the church commits to the fellowship or community of the saints, God will add to that community. Let’s be committed to the community or fellowship of believers that God has assigned us to be apart of and watch Him bless our community beyond measure!
God, help me to see the benefits of being committed to my church, Amen!
